CPR/AED for Coaches

Life-saving training

More and more elementary, middle, and high schools and youth sport organizations are requiring CPR and AED certification for coaches. Sudden cardiac arrest is the cause of nearly 350,000 deaths in the U.S. each year, 7,000 of which are children. Studies show that 95 percent die without early treatment and that with immediate CPR/AED administration, survival rates double or even triple in some cases.

The new ASEP CPR/AED for Coaches course delivers that training through a course that’s specifically geared toward coaches. Developed and delivered by ASEP in conjunction with the American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI), CPR/AED for Coaches shows participants how to provide basic life support, which includes the following:

Why adopt the ASEP CPR/AED for Coaches course?

How to register for CPR/AED for Coaches

Designed as a blended course, CPR/AED for Coaches requires participants to complete roughly two hours of online instruction before attending a two-hour hands-on clinic demonstrating proper CPR and AED technique.

If you are a coach looking to take CPR/AED for Coaches to achieve CPR and AED certification, follow these steps:

  1. Identify a classroom training session (part B) that you would like to attend. In most cases, individual instructors, state high school associations, schools, districts, or youth sport organizations will schedule part B sessions in advance. For a schedule of part B clinics, contact your organization or visit the ASEP Classroom Course Finder.
  2. Contact the instructor to register for the part B session. Part B registrations are handled by the instructor or host organization, not by ASEP or Human Kinetics. Any part B registration fees are paid to the instructor or organization either in advance or on-site at the session.
  3. Gain access to the online portion of the course (part A). You’ll do this in one of two ways: Your instructor may assign you access to the online course. Or, your instructor may require you to purchase part A from the ASEP Web site.
  4. Take the online course (part A). Completion of part A is required before you can participate in part B. A minimum score of 80 percent is required to pass the online course. You must present a certificate of course completion for part A to your instructor before you start the part B clinic.

All course materials—including the online modules, reading material, supplemental forms and checklists, and test to assess your understanding of the course content—are provided conveniently within the course. After registering for part A, you receive instant access to the course and e-tools—you do not have to wait for materials to be shipped to you.
  5. Attend the part B clinic. After passing part A with a minimum score of 80 percent, you attend the classroom course (part B). During the clinic, you will be assessed on your ability to perform the basic functions of CPR and AED use. You will be graded by the instructor, and upon successful demonstration of the skills, you will receive your certification card on-site. Your certification is valid for two years.

How do I get started?

Becoming a training center is easy!

  1. Complete a training center application.
  2. Choose your instructors and complete a new instructor application for each of them.
  3. Have each instructor complete the online instructor course. Instructors who are not already certified instructors with another agency must also attend an instructor-led training session in order to finish the certification process. Those who are already certified instructors with American Red Cross, American Heart Association, Ellis & Associates, or National Safety Council qualify for reciprocity and do not need to attend the instructor-led session.
  4. Purchase online courses for your coaches and begin training!
